FinOps Defect Score

A 0–100 composite metric calculated from objective test results — designed to be repeatable, benchmarkable, and board-reportable.

The FinOps Defect Score is finops.qa’s headline delivery metric — a single number that answers: “how well is our FinOps program actually working?”

How It Is Calculated

DomainWeightTests
Tagging & Attribution30%Spend-weighted tag coverage, allocation model accuracy, shared resource attribution
Budget & Alerting25%Alert threshold accuracy, routing validation, latency measurement, anomaly detection
Tooling Accuracy25%Tool output vs. provider invoice across 12 cost dimensions
Governance & Process20%CFCMM level, budget owner assignment, optimisation cadence, shift-left controls

Each test produces Pass (full score), Warning (partial), or Fail (zero). The Score is the weighted sum.

Benchmark

Score RangeInterpretation
0–30Critical — active financial loss; immediate remediation required
31–55At Risk — significant defects; FinOps program not functioning as designed
56–70Developing — partial controls; key gaps in alerting or attribution
71–85Managed — functional FinOps; optimisation opportunities remain
86–100Optimised — continuous improvement; retainer maintenance mode

Industry benchmark (2026): Average first-assessment score: 47/100. Only 11% of organisations score above 70 on first assessment.

Why a Score (Not a Report)

The FinOps Defect Score repeats (same tests = same score), benchmarks (compare across peer group), tracks (quarterly trend), and communicates (one number for a board pack). Most FinOps audits produce a slide deck. We produce a number.
